Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right Taekwondo gym for me?

When choosing a Taekwondo gym, consider the following factors:

Affiliation & Recognition – Look for gyms recognized by World Taekwondo (WT) and Kukkiwon for official Black Belt certification and Olympic-style training.
Training Focus – Do you prefer competitive sparring, poomsae (forms), self-defense, or general fitness? Some gyms specialize in different aspects.
Instructor Credentials – Check if the instructors are certified black belts with competition or coaching experience.
Class Structure & Environment – Visit the gym, observe a class, and see if the atmosphere is disciplined, supportive, and motivating.
Student Success – Ask about the gym’s track record in competitions, Black Belt promotions, and student progress.
Trial Class – The best way to find out if a gym suits you is to try a class and see if it meets your expectations.

Try shopping around and visiting different gyms. Compare their training style, credentials, and student progress to see which one suits you best.

We welcome students as young as 4 years old! Our programs are tailored for different age groups:
Tiny Tigers (4-6 years old)
Kids/Teens (7-17 years old)
Adults (18+)

There is no “best” age to start Taekwondo—everyone benefits in unique and amazing ways!

Tiny Tigers (4-6 years old): Develop listening skills, improve focus and motor skills, learn discipline and respect, have fun, and make new friends.

Older Kids (7-12 years old): Learn discipline, develop self-confidence, goal-setting, and perseverance while improving mental and physical strength, coordination, and skills to excel in Taekwondo.

Teens (13-17 years old): Enjoy new challenges, work toward big goals like earning a Black Belt, build social connections and leadership skills, stay active in a positive environment, and even open doors to exciting opportunities by excelling in Taekwondo!

Adults (18+): Improve physical and mental well-being, relieve stress, get a great cardio workout, and learn practical self-defense skills. Many adults also fulfill their lifelong dream of becoming a Black Belt!

Taekwondo is for everyone, regardless of age. The key is to stay committed to your training. What matters most is your progress—physically, mentally, and socially.

Of course! High kicks aren’t the only key to success in Taekwondo. Speed, power, and proper technique play a big role too. With the right training, you can still perform well, even if you’re not the most flexible. Plus, our flexibility regimen, included in our training, can help you improve over time, no matter your age!

Not at all! In fact, that’s even more reason to start training right away!!! Taekwondo is a great way to improve your fitness, and with consistent practice, you’ll see progress in a relatively short amount of time.

The time it takes to earn a Black Belt depends on where and how often you train. On average, if you train 2 to 3 times a week, it’s possible to achieve a Black Belt in about 3 years. Ultimately, the journey is in your hands!

Taekwondo is not inherently dangerous. Injuries are rare when there is proper instruction and when students follow the guidelines correctly. Like any sport, safety is a priority, and we ensure a controlled, supportive environment for all our students.

A recognized Taekwondo gym is affiliated with Kukkiwon and World Taekwondo (WT). You can check by asking:
✅ Does the gym issue Kukkiwon-certified black belts?
✅ Are the instructors Kukkiwon-certified and USA Taekwondo (USATKD) members?
✅ Does the gym follow World Taekwondo rules and curriculum?
✅ Can students compete in WT-sanctioned tournaments like Nationals and the US Open?

If the answer is yes, the gym is officially recognized.

Internationally Recognized Black Belt – A Kukkiwon-certified black belt is valid worldwide.
Olympic-Style Training – The curriculum follows WT competition rules, just like the Olympics.
Certified Instructors – Coaches must hold legitimate Kukkiwon and WT certifications.
Access to Major Competitions – Students can compete in official WT events, not just local tournaments.
Standardized Curriculum – The belt system, forms (poomsae), and techniques follow WT guidelines.

❌ Black Belts May Not Be Recognized – If the gym isn’t Kukkiwon-affiliated, its black belt certification may not be valid at other WT schools or competitions.
❌ Limited Competition Access – Students might only compete in local, unaffiliated tournaments rather than official events.
❌ Inconsistent Curriculum – The belt ranking system and techniques may not follow WT standards.
❌ Unverified Instructor Credentials – Instructors may not have official Kukkiwon or USATKD certifications.

Why does this matter for my training?

If you want official rank recognition, international competition opportunities, and standardized training, a recognized gym is the best choice. Otherwise, you may have to restart your belt rank or face limitations in official events.

The Five Tenets of Taekwondo at Superfoot Taekwondo Tigers

  1. Self-Confidence
At Superfoot Taekwondo Tigers, we empower our students to believe in themselves. Through consistent practice, students develop a sense of accomplishment that builds their confidence, enabling them to take on challenges both on and off the mat with assurance and resilience.
  2. Modesty
We teach our students the value of humility and respect for others. Taekwondo is not just about strength but about understanding that true power comes from being humble and grounded, regardless of one’s achievements or abilities.
  3. Indomitable Spirit
This tenet inspires our students to have an “unconquerable mind”, even in the face of adversity. At Superfoot Taekwondo, we cultivate a mindset that embraces courage, mental strength, and the determination to persevere through challenges, ensuring that our students grow into strong and resilient individuals. We teach them the ability to stay calm under pressure!
  4. Perseverance
Success in Taekwondo—and in life—requires patience and dedication. We encourage our students to remain consistent, to learn from setbacks, and to push forward with a positive attitude, knowing that perseverance leads to both personal and martial growth. NEVER GIVE UP!
  5. Etiquette
At the core of martial arts is respect—for instructors, peers, and oneself. We emphasize proper manners, discipline, and respect for others, helping students carry the principles of Taekwondo into their everyday interactions.
